Data mapping is a powerful tool that can help unlock data driven strategies to develop smart outreach campaigns that resonate with your target audience and increase engagement. This easily accessible tool applies data mapping techniques to visualize the potential reach of your campaign and how to deliver your outreach tactics with pinpoint accuracy. Data mapping tools can be applied to all types of campaigns. In this session, we will use the City of San José’s recycling campaign as an example. You will be able to apply what you learn to your own program needs back home. In this session, we will:

  • Describe what is a data mapping tool and how it can help develop a smarter outreach campaign
  • Different types of data mapping platforms like ARC GIS or Google Maps
  • Identify neighborhoods (audience) with high rates of recycling contamination
  • Dissect census demographic data, program data, language, and socio-economic elements to craft personalized messaging
  • Demo a populated map

Carolyn Le

Carolyn manages the City of San Jose’s Recycle Right campaign, a public education campaign focused on reducing recycling contamination through education and behavior change strategies.

Born and raised in eastside San José, Carolyn’s experience in communications is grounded in community-centered approaches to address information disparity and to amplify community voice. Carolyn served in public relations at the County of Santa Clara in the Office of Immigrant Relations, the Division of Equity and Social Justice, and led multilingual marketing campaigns in the Emergency Operations Center’s COVID-19 response. Prior to local government, she was a community organizer specializing in narrative strategy, media relations, and multimedia communications.

Carolyn earned a degree in Literature from UC Santa Cruz. She enjoys spending time outdoors and is a parent to two loving dogs, Bruce the Rottweiler and Riley the Golden Retriever.

Ivan Gutierrez

Ivan Gutierrez is a Public Information Representative II with the City of San Jose Environmental Services Department. A few months into his role with the city, he previously served as a Public Information Officer for San Joaquin County Emergency Services. Prior to becoming a communications professional, he studied Public Relations and Communication Studies at San Jose State University. Within the Environmental Services Department, his responsibilities include supporting various public communication initiatives, including social media, print mailers, graphic design, and advertising.
